Michael left school in 1966 to follow the Foundation course
at Thurrock College of Art. He left in 1968 to study Fine Art at
Stourbridge College of Art and from there he went to Brighton in 1971
to do a PGCE.
He started his teaching career at Woodlands School in Basildon, leaving
in 1974 to move to Poole in Dorset. He taught art at Seldown Boys' School
for 13 years.
The school merged with Ashley Cross Girls' School and
moved to a new site in 1987 and was renamed Ashdown School. In 1992
he left Ashdown to take up the position of Head of Art at Glenmoor
School in Bournemouth. He left Glenmoor in 2007 to concentrate on his
own painting. After leaving art college Michael devoted much of his
time, when not teaching, to painting and drawing.
Working mainly in
pencil, oils and acrylic he produced intensely detailed, natural
landscapes usually
of woodland. The demands of teaching and family life allowed
little time for painting. He is now working in acrylic on similar
subjects
and is taking the opportunity to develop a personal style.
His main inspiration is Andy Goldsworthy.
